Q10096 - HOWTO: How to find your "Computer Name"

How to find your computer name

Click here to find out your computer name.  We have an internal site (http://mypc) that will show you your computer's name and IP address.

IP Addresses can change on a daily basis.  It is best to provide your computer name when contacting the OIT Help Desk unless an IP address is specifically requested.

If the webpage is unable to determine your computer name then you will need to use the following instructions.

Windows Instructions

  • On the Windows Desktop, right-click on "My Computer" and select "Properties"
  • In the System Properties window, select the "Computer Name" tab
  • Take note of the full computer name

Macintosh Instructions

There are two ways to find the computer name for your Macintosh computer:
  • Method #1
    • On the login screen, the computer name is listed right below the "Mac OS X" apple logo
  • Method #2
    • Click on the blue Apple menu and select "System Preferences"
    • In the System Preferences window, under the "Internet & Network" section, select "Sharing"
    • Take note of the computer name
